Public Awareness Activities
World Fish Migration Day 2014 in Açude-Ponte dam fish pass
On the 24th May 2014, World Fish Migration Day, several activities organized by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), with the support of researchers from the University of Évora and MARE, took place at the Açude-Ponte dam fish pass. These included visits to the fish pass and the monitoring room, and interaction of the public with the researchers involved in the River Mondego restoration projects.
The researchers presented the work developed in this infrastructure with a demonstration of the sampling techniques used to monitor fish passes in general, and Açude-Ponte dam fish pass in particular.
Students from universities and junior high schools have visited the fish pass facilities in several occasions. In the future, a regular visiting scheme is expected to be implemented.

Fish models and exhibitions panels
Real size models of the most emblematic species that use the Açude-Ponte dam fish pass will be placed in the monitoring building. This will allow visitors to identify the species that are passing by the visualization window and to get in contact with the target species using this fish pass. Interpretative panels were placed near the monitoring building of Açude-Ponte dam fish pass and close to all the naturalized passages that were built in River Mondego (see brochure).

The project coordinator, Dr. P.R. Almeida, presented an overview of the results obtained in the project, emphasizing the importance of the efforts and strict collaboration between all partners for the success of the project, and how it can be replicated in other rivers. Several invited speakers also presented their contribution to the project.
